HECTOMARE

Mare d'Hectomare

A bit of history :

Contrary to what a hasty etymology might lead one to believe, the name of this commune does not mean “the hundred ponds”. Beyond this statement, there are many opinions as to the meaning: “mare du guet-apens”, according to a Scandinavian origin, but also “la mare d’Ecquetot”, a neighbouring village.

The church of Saint-Taurin dates from the 16th century. The gateway to the cemetery forms a curious low-arched archway, pierced in a stone wall dating from the early 17th century.

The church, spared by the fire of June 1938, was restored: the walls and woodwork were paid for by the municipality, the paintings by the parish, the Stations of the Cross offered by Mrs Jouen and the windows by the population. The solemn inauguration took place on 14 May 1939.
